The Northern Michigan University golf team placed eighth at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship from Eagle Eye Golf Course on Monday (Oct. 7). Junior Ayrton Mantha finished in a six-way tie for ninth overall, scoring an 11-over par (227) for the three rounds.
Eighth is the best team finish in the last 12 years. The Wildcats improved their positioning each day, finishing tied for 10th after round one and ninth after round two. The overall team score was 927, one stroke behind seventh place Northwood. Scores rose as the weather conditions declined with each day.
Mantha had an opening round 71 to put him in second place. He was tied for third with a 77 on Sunday and finished the weekend with a final round score of 79.
Senior Mike Murphy was four strokes back (231) of Mantha in a tie for 20th. He finished 14-over with a 75, 77 and 79.
Senior Jared Reid carded a 73 on the final day and finished one stroke behind Murphy in a tie for 27th. He began the final day in 49th after scoring a 77 and 82 in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Austin LeGault (85-81-79) and freshman Dustin Dishaw (86-74-95) rounded out NMU golfers. LeGault aced hole 17 in the practice round on Friday (Oct. 4).
Malone won the conference team title with a team score of 903 (39-over). Ashland and Ohio Dominican were both one stroke back.
Wyatt Drost from Saginaw Valley State is the GLIAC Champion with a three-over, 219.
Also finishing ahead of NMU was SVSU (916), Grand Valley State (917) and Ferris State (921).
The GLIAC Championship wraps up the fall portion of the 2013-14 schedule. The 'Cats get back on the course during the first weekend of April down in Dayton, Ohio.
Notes: NMU was eighth in 2001-02. The best finish was 1998-99 in third.
