Rampaging mute swan killed by natural resources officer

A state Department of Natural Resources officer has shot and killed a male mute swan that had attacked people on Silver Lake in Grand Traverse County.

DNR wildlife technician Katie Keen tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle the agency received several calls over the past few weeks about the aggressive swan.

She says the DNR has a duty to protect people's safety and that transferring the swan wasn't an option because it would have simply moved the problem to another lake.

The swan was killed last weekend.

Mute swans are considered an invasive species that can displace native species and damage wetlands. The DNR tried to decrease its numbers last year.
