Last night the Shipwreck Showcase was held in Munising. The night of music and stories benefitted the Life of Lake Superior program held for youth each summer in the Munising area. I was honored to be master of ceremonies for the event.
The highlight of the evening was a talk by Dennis Hale. He was the sole survivor of the wreck of the Daniel J. Morrell, an ore carrier that went down on Lake Huron in a vicious storm on November 29, 1966. His story is incredible. For 30 years he refused to talk about the incident, but finally, in a roundtable discussion at the Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Hale related his harrowing experience to the small audience. As he put it, ??there wasn??t a dry eye in the house?? when he was done. He has a book out called ??Shipwrecked, Reflections of the Sole Survivor.?? I??ve barely cracked the cover since I just got a hold of it last night. However, I can say that after hearing him, I??m sure it will be a great read.
