It may be too cold for most recreational activities, but the weather is perfect for ice fishing.
The Ponnistus Athletic Club of Covington hosted their 29th annual ice fishing derby on Vermiliac Lake this Saturday afternoon. Two thousand dollars were given across four different categories. Other prizes were awarded to participants that didn't win in their categories including door prizes and even bicycles for kids.
"The fish I just got fishing on a tip-up with a three inch sucker minnow. This is my second year. I had a third place crappie last year. I believe it was 13 inches," said Dan Woodruff.
The derby is hosted every year on the first Saturday in January. The entrance fee is ten dollars and the contest usually runs from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
