A local family logging company wins 2013 Logger of the Year

A family logging company was recognized as the Michigan Association of Timbermen 2013 Logger of the Year.

Marvin Nelson Forrest Products is a family owned and operated logging company. This Cornell business has been in operation for over 40 years.

This is the first time they have been recognized by the Association of Timbermen.

â??Itâ??s nice to win something and be notified that youâ??ve done a good job,â?? said Marvin Nelson Forrest Products partner Dave Nelson. â??But, on the other hand, weâ??re not out there seeking for it either. Regardless if thereâ??s an award or not, weâ??d do the same job no matter what.â??

The company feels it is their simple, yet powerful, values that set them apart from the other logging companies.

â??My dad always taught my brother and I as we were growing up is you do things the right way, treat people right, be honest with them,â?? said other business partner, Brian Nelson. â??Basically treat people the way you want to be treated, and treat them with respect.â??

Brian and Dave began learning these values, and the machinery, at a young age.

â??We actually started running equipment at probably 9,10 years old,â?? Brian said. â??First day of summer was great. We were out running equipment. Itâ??s all weâ??ve ever done.â??

They are already instilling the same award winning values into their own children.

The Nelson grandchildren are planning on keeping the company in the family for at least one more generation.
