Since early May, the scene for residents and motorists traveling through Champion in western Marquette County has been hectic. But after the completion of almost 10 miles of highway, curbing, and a new one mile bike path leading to Van Riper State Park in early November, could there be more renovations on the way?
"We would improve the downtown," said Township Supervisor Berle LaPin. "Our community of Champion would improve by its looks. And a bike trail could come down through Van Riper Park and people could come down through there and walk through the park."
LaPin is talking about a new five-year recreational plan designed by the township board. The multi-million dollar proposal includes creating an eight-acre wetland park through the middle of town and also renovating some of the business storefronts.
LaPin says the need for the upgrades all comes down to tourism.
"Tourism is a big business," LaPin explained. "And it might cause some people to come in and build here because there is some vacant land."
LaPin says having a plan set in place will make it easier to apply for state grants to fund the projects.
