It may be small, but the Alger Parks and Recreation's Fitness Center is fully equipped for your full body workout. Alger County Recreation Director, Deb Fulcher, says it's the only community gym in the Munising area.
"We fit the need because we are a small rural area, and we do not have YMCAs," said Fulcher.
There's a little of everything, from treadmills, strengthening machines, and free weights.
Marathon runner Lori Carr-Mitchell lives in Munising four months out of the year and thinks it's a great center for the community.
"I don't have anywhere else to workout. When I come here, since they put together this rec center, I come in and it has absolutely everything I need. The people are wonderful. I absolutely love it! It gives me a good workout," said Carr-Mitchell.
It's not the only service the Alger Parks and Recreation Department offers to keep the community living an active, healthy lifestyle. They also offer a variety of classes for adults and kids, so they are hoping to lease the Central Elementary School in town for an official community center. They provide 52 programs during the year. The Fitness Center is the only one that has a set location. So with a new community center, all the programs can be under one roof.
The center encourages family involvement.
"While a parent is working out, a child can be doing gymnastics or the child can workout with the parent. We will also have the gymnasium; they can shoot hoops," Fulcher said.
They hope to be working from the Central Elementary School by spring. For more information on their programs, click here .
