It was beginning to smell just like a Christmas dinner at the Ishpeming Elks Club. Preparations were already underway Sunday for the big meal. Hams were being sliced, turkeys were in the oven and soon the sauces and other trimmings will be finished. The Elks were fortunate to get a $1,000 donation toward the meal. They'll serve 200 pounds of turkey, 70 pounds of ham, along with countless pounds of potatoes, corn, stuffing and gravy. Some 200 people will come together for the community dinner on Christmas day. They'll either dine in or have their meals delivered. It's a special event for the 50 volunteers who come and make the holiday something special.
"These dinners are a way to give back at Christmas. You know it's not all about just presents and you know eating too much and watching football. It's about giving back to the community, giving back to your neighbors," said Dinner Volunteer, Dave Aro.
The meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas day at the Ishpeming Elks Club. If you'd like to make a reservation or have your meal delivered, you can call the Elks at 486-6890.
