Listening to police scanners is nothing new, however, new apps for Android and iPhone can allow people to listen in, anywhere in the country.
Up until recently, scanners of any kind were illegal to carry in your car. These apps allow users to turn their smartphone into a police scanner for local police or that of New York or Los Angeles.
However, those convicted of a felony within five years are not allowed to possess any type of police scanner.
"As long as it's not being used for illegal purposes, you know, trying to gain personal information, which may be transmitting by the air waves, are open and they are public, and we're aware of that and the dispatchers are also aware of that," said Sheriff's Deputy David Lemire.
Having a police scanner app in your possession while committing a crime will add a year or more to a sentence.
