TV6 has received word of a prison incident at Kinross Correctional Facility.
Three inmates gained control of a semi truck and tried to break through the fence, but the correction officers were able to stop them.
According to a witness in the area, one of the escapees was shot and killed during their capture. The other two inmates have been taken back into custody.
According to NBC 7&4 in Traverse City, the Chippewa County Prosecutor is on scene with investigators at this time, and more details are expected to be released later on Thursday.
The Kinross prison is in the town of Kincheloe. The perimeter of the prison is composed of two perimeter chain-link fences monitored with electronic security devices and topped with razor-ribbon wire. The perimeter is patrolled by armed guards.
Kinross is a Level I and II security prison and has the largest fenced area (113 acres currently enclosed) of any state prison in Michigan.
