Authorities warn of fake police vehicle

The Marquette County Sheriff's Department is warning people of a possible fake police vehicle around the County Road 581 area.

On Saturday around 11:30 p.m., the sheriff's office received a call after a young woman was signaled to pull over by what she thought was a police vehicle. The suspect vehicle had a red oscillating light on the roof, along with a spotlight.

After she realized it was not a police vehicle, she drove to her residence. She witnessed the vehicle parked on the side of the road with its lights off near County Road PRG in Tilden Township. The woman's father searched County Road 581 and was passed by what appeared to be a dark colored S-10 pickup truck with bright lights on, a spotlight and an oscillating red light on the dashboard.

The sheriff's department is asking for any information you might have on this incident. If you have noticed this type of activity near Marquette County Road 581, please call their office at (906) 225-8435.

If you are ever unsure if the vehicle stopping you is an official law enforcement officer, call 911 or drive to the nearest police station, sheriff's office, or state police post. If you are in a rural area, drive to a lighted public facility, but do not speed up or attempt to outrun the vehicle.

Impersonating a police officer to commit a crime is a felony punishable by four years in prison.
