Congressman Dan Benishek is in the Upper Peninsula on an energy tour.
He visited the Marquette Board of Light and Power's Shiras Steam Plant. He toured the coal fire units, the 6th deck to the control room.
A number of BLP executives, and operation managers were on hand discussing how they generate power. BLP officials it's a necessity to find a reliable way to provide the energy to customers in the U.P. whether through bio-mass production, gas, or renewable.
"We need to have power generation in Northern Michigan," says Benishek. "With the Obama Administration cutting off the production of coal fire power plants it makes it very difficult for us to have the power we need to have industry in Northern Michigan."
Benishek will also be touring other power plants in Northern Lower Michigan later this week.
