Boy Scouts learn about mining and earn a new badge

Boy Scouts got to learn about U.P. mining and earn a badge while doing it at the 1st annual Boy Scouts Mining in Society Merit Badge Day.

Hosted by Cliffs Natural Resources, the event involved the scouts going on three tours including a tour of the Michigan Iron Industry Museum and a tour of Cliffs Mining Operations.

A Cliffs spokesperson said it was a great opportunity to make learning fun for the Scouts.

"Today was a great day. They enjoyed it, they had a lot of fun, they were able to see a modern mining operation in action. They were able to see the big equipment as well as learn a lot about the history of mining." said District Manager for Cliffs Public Affairs Jennifer Huetter.

After the tours were done at the mines, the event ended with the awarding of Mining in Society merit badges to the Scouts.
