The very first FIRST Robotics competition ever held in the U.P. took place in Escanaba last weekend.

Calumet High School's team, the CopperBots, took the gold with their robot and are on to the next district competition this weekend.

FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology."

The CopperBots have competed in many competitions before, but this is their first experience competing with teams in the U.P. This year's mission is to toss an exercise ball into baskets.

The CopperBots say they feel confident they could make to the state competition for the first time this year.

â??It was pretty exciting because it was the first one in the U.P., and we're the U.P. team the farthest one from there, and we ended up winning it,â?? said CopperBots team captain and Calumet High School senior, Olivia Stroup. â??Winning the first FIRST one at Saint Joe's last year, so we have two in a row, and that was pretty neat.â??

The team heads to Traverse City for their next meet this Thursday.
