Camper plunges to death at waterfall

Miners Falls at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

One man is dead after what appears to be an accidental fall at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County.

The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Franklin Carver Sade of Norway. He died after a fall of about 70 feet from the top of Miners Falls. The accident happened at 2:30 a.m. on Monday, November 11.

According to the National Park Service, Sade and Jordan McGuire were camping near the top of Miners Falls. Sade was getting wood for the campfire when he fell. After the fall, McGuire called 911 once he reached a location with cell service. Inclement weather, steep, rough terrain and dark conditions made the rescue operation difficult.

The victim was eventually recovered and taken to Munising Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Acting Chief Ranger Bill Smith said there are no established campsites in or around the Miners Falls area. He said alcohol may have been a factor in the incident. An autopsy will take place at Marquette General Hospital. The case remains open pending further investigation.
