Car strikes moose in Republic Township

On Friday at 10:35 p.m., the Marquette Sheriff's Office and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources responded to a car/moose personal injury accident which occurred in Republic Township on Highway M-95, five miles south of US-41.

The driver, 42-year-old Neil Nieminsky II, and passenger Martin Oakley, age 33, both of Republic, were traveling north on M-95 in a 1995 Subaru Legacy when two moose were standing alongside the roadway. Nieminsky swerved to the left to avoid the moose when a third moose entered the roadway in the vehicle's path. Nieminsky was unable to avoid striking the animal head-on.

Both men sustained minor injuries and were transported by Bell Memorial EMS to Marquette General Hospital. The cow moose was dispatched by the DNR.
