Students in the Chassell school district kicked off the March reading month by reading for an hour with parents and volunteers from the community Monday morning.
About 140 elementary students read with over 100 parents and volunteers from the VFW, Ladies Auxiliary, Chassell Lions Club, and retired teachers.
For the entire month of March, each student has a challenge of reading for at least 20 minutes at home after school each day. Teachers say the goal is to get kids into reading as a habit.
â??We're really encouraging students that all the positives that come with reading and to see that it adds into every aspect of their lives, not only here, but outside of school as well,â?? said fourth grade teacher, Heather Hainault.
Teachers say if the students complete their reading goals, they will be rewarded with a track and field day at the end of the school year.
