City manager officially resigns, interim manager named

Ishpeming City Manager Jared Ottenwess made his resignation official on Wednesday morning.

The city council met for a special meeting and unanimously accepted the resignation of Ottenwess. He said he will continue to help the city during the search for a new manager, and his final day will be July 10.

He's leaving to become the city manager for Traverse City. Ottenwess started as the city manager in Ishpeming back in March of 2010.

"We'll start looking for a new city manager as soon as possible, maybe as early as next week start looking," said Ishpeming Mayor Mike Tall. "Usually when you're looking for a city manager, a real strong financial background. We have a real good financial manager, and if you get a good city manager that works with him, it will be twice as successful."

The city has named John Kangas as the interim city manager. Kangas is currently the director of the city's Department of Public Works. Ishpeming is considering using the Michigan Municipal League to help with the search for a full-time manager.
