A clarity hearing was held Monday to approve or deny the wording of one Gladstone residentâ??s petition to recall three city officials. Timothy DeClaire hopes to recall Mayor Joseph Maki, Mayor Pro Tem Hugo Mattonen and Commissioner David Nemacheck for levying a mill.
On the petition, DeClaire said their â??levying an additional 1.8 mills to the Gladstone City millage without holding a public hearingâ?? is not right.
During public comment, Commissioner Nemacheck said he was concerned the verbiage on the petition suggested the board members did something illegal, which is not true, he said.
The Delta County Election Commission agreed with Nemacheck unanimously. They denied the petition wording for its lack of clarity, saying they were concerned voters would assume the city officials broke a law.
â??Whether or not it was legal or not to do I felt it was the wrong thing to do by an elected official,â?? said DeClaire. More importantly that that money would go into the general fund and could be used for anything in the future.â??
DeClaire said he is planning on rewording and resubmitting the petition.
