Cliffs and Steelworkers unions donate to local charities

Cliffs Natural Resources and the United Steelworkers Local Unions 4974 and 4950 have announced that they are donating $18,000 to charitable organizations in Upper Michigan.

Cliffs announced on Wednesday that the money, provided by the Cliffs Michigan Operations vending machine fund, will go to organizations in Marquette, Alger, and Baraga Counties. The money comes from vending machines located around property used by employees and visitors.

"This is a unique opportunity for our employees to provide support to the community right before the holidays," said James Kochevar, Cliffs Michigan Operations general manager. "The need for assistance continues to rise in our community and we're happy to join with the Steelworkers to be able to provide support that will help individuals and families in need."

USW Local 4974 President Jim Jarvi stated that the employees are grateful to be able to extend the charitable donations to local organizations.

"Through these donations, our employees are able to brighten the holidays of individuals and families in our local communities," Jarvi added.

Part of the $18,000 in contributions will be received by St. Vincent de Paul Societies in Marquette, Gwinn, Republic, Ishpeming, L'Anse and Munising. The money will also be sent to Salvation Army locations in Ishpeming and Marquette, as well as the Steelworkers Coalition and the Marquette Women's Center.
