Coast Guard offers boating safety classes

Even though it is winter and many parts of our lakes are frozen over, that does not mean it is too early for boating safety classes.

This Wednesday, the Coast Guard in Dollar Bay will offer sailing and power boating classes for those interested in learning more about how to stay safe when out on the lake.

The nine-week course will teach participants how to use a boat radio and what types of safety equipment is needed for your boat.

â??We have a class on trailering, on navigation, and what to look for when the weather patterns change on the lake, so thereâ??s many different classes that will help people become safer and better boaters,â?? said Flotilla Commander Dave Boutin.

Anyone interested is asked to preregister by calling Dave Boutin at (906) 482-0026.

The course costs $45, $60 per couple, and $5 for each additional family member.

At the completion of the class, participants will receive a certificate of accomplishment. The certificate can be used with some insurance companies to reduce boater insurance rates.

Those who complete the course will also be eligible to receive a discount on purchases made through West Marine and Boat US.
