12 year NBA veteran Jason Collins has come out as the first professional athlete in the four major American sports to be openly gay.
Collins came out in an article in this month's issue of Sports Illustrated. In the interview he said "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete but since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation". We got a local reaction from a member of OUTlook, Northern Michigan University's LGBT organization.
"I think it's awesome because it shows then that our society is getting a little bit more accepting that professionals can come out and then not fear backlash and that he's comfortable with saying who he is," said Joshua Garnett member of OUTlook.
During his time in the NBA Collins played for the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics and most recently the Washington Wizards. Collins is a free agent for next season.
