      Competition promotes youth fishing

Thirteen teams participated in the Lund Angler Young Angler (AYA) Fishing Tournament in Chassell."I think it's a good activity for kids to get out and enjoy the outdoors. We've been talking about it, and we're pretty excited about the opportunity to participate in the event," said Kevin Store, participant. The young participants are competing for the grand prize which includes a 12-foot boat and a Motorguide Trolling Motor.

"This tournament is either five walleye or three bass. We're trying to target a walleye tournament, but walleye are a little tough on Portage Lake, so we added bass in to get a little more fish for the kids to catch so they don't have to have a long, hard day of looking for walleye that are hard to find right now,â?? said Jim Baker, tournament organizer.Once each team returned to the dock, their fish were placed in buckets and weighed.

Owen and Miles Van Tassel were the winning team, and their fish weighed in at 11 pounds.

"I feel really happy and excited because my friends might like it," said Owen Van Tassel. The Van Tassels will move on to the AYA International Championship in Ontario.
