Thursday was Bike to Work Day in the Keweenaw, and many people were up early to commute to work on their bicycles.
The event was put on, in part, by the City of Houghton Bike and Pedestrian Committee and was part of Bike to Work week. Fueling stations were set up around Houghton County for people to grab a drink or granola bar on their way to work.
Many people say biking to work in the morning improves their mood as well as helps their bodies feel better. Hancock City Manager Glenn Anderson rode his bike Thursday morning, and says he hopes people will make it a habit.
"I think it's just getting out and seeing some fresh air, seeing the flora and fauna in the early morning or later in the evening," said Anderson. "We have people commuting 14, 15, 17 miles this morning that have already ridden in. Obviously, I think it gets them to work in a better frame of mind, and they get a little exercise while doing it."
Bike to Work week and Bike to Work Day is an event that takes place nationwide during the month of May.
