DNR accepting applications for Wildlife Habitat Grant Program

The Department of Natural Resources will now be accepting Wildlife Habitat Grant Program applications through August 12.

The Wildlife Habitat Grant Program (WHGP) is a cooperative effort between the DNR's Wildlife Division and Grants Management Section. WHGP began in October 2013 and will be funded by a portion of the revenue from fishing and hunting licenses.

"This is an exciting opportunity to partner with others in the state to increase the habitat available for game species in Michigan and to enhance the existing habitat for the benefit of hunters, trappers and wildlife viewers, says DNR Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason.

WHGP funding is available for local, state, federal and tribal governments, along with profits groups, nonprofit groups, and individuals. Projects featuring habitat enhancement will be given highest priority. The minimum amount will be set at $15,000, while the maximum will be the amount of funds available for the grant cycle, which will be approximately $1 million for 2015.

Prospective applicants can find the detailed program handbook and application at their website . Successful grant applications will be announced by Oct 1.
