      DNR Pocket Park seeks volunteers

The U.P. State Fair is coming to Escanaba August 13-19, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is calling all volunteers to help out during that time.

The DNR Pocket Park will have thousands walk through its gates to enjoy the free outdoor activities like archery, pellet gun shooting, and fishing. They're seeking volunteers to assist them with things like fixing fishing poles and greeting visitors. Pocket Park Manager, Joe Russell, says they require 40 volunteers per day.

      The two time slots available are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m.

You'll get not only a free t-shirt, but also a free fair pass for the day you volunteer.

â??Volunteering is so nice,â?? explains Joe Russell. â??It gets you out of the house, and you can come and help out the children here. The Pocket Park is all for the children. They like to come in here. Some kids have come in here for the very first time and caught fish.â??

There are over 100 volunteers signed up so far. To see how you can sign up to donate your time, contact Janet Canode at (517) 241-5120 or at You can also contact Pocket Park Manager, Joe Russell, at (906) 789-0714.
