Local dog owners learned what to do if their dog gets caught in an animal trap, Monday night. Michigan Department of Natural Resources Biologist Brian Roell discussed trapping and how to safely release pets from traps.
Roell has had to rescue several dogs during his years with the DNR. He demonstrated how different types of traps work and how to disarm them. People at Monday's class actually got to set and disarm the traps themselves.
"Most of the people are just so unfamiliar with how a trap works; they don't know how to get it off the dog, and just with a little bit of knowledge tonight, I think everybody walked out of here with that ability."
Roell also said remaining calm is key to the situation. The busiest time for trapping in Upper Michigan is during the fall.
