      Donations for victims of fire

Bags of clothing are being dropped off for a small family that lost everything in a fire on New Year's Day.

"Mostly I would say clothing right now. The son wears a 3T and a size 10 young boy shoes. The mother wears a medium top and a size 4/5 pants," said Sarah Thompson, collection organizer.

It happened on Michigan Street in Marquette at 4:30 Tuesday morning. Just a day later, you can get a clear picture of how the fire engulfed the house. The house is almost completely charred.

Marquette Firefighters worked for several hours to put out the blaze. Now arson investigators are looking for the cause of the fire.

"Arson investigators from the Michigan State Police, the Marquette Fire Department and this office are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing at this time," said Detective Sgt. Mike Kohler, Marquette City Police.

No one was injured. Currently the victims are staying with family members.

Friends are trying to work with Pigs N Heat for assistance as well. They've also created a account to collect any monetary donations. ã??

"It's only been up for 29 hours and we already have over a thousand dollars. That's really great. And, I just hope other people donate even if it's just a dollar; any little bit helps," Thompson said.

They're also hosting a benefit for the family on January 15 at the Ore Dock. There's a five dollar cover charge, and donations for a silent auction are welcomed.

Donation items can be dropped off at Jessica&Company in Marquette as well as U.P. Insurance in Negaunee. To have your donations picked up, call Sarah Thompson at (906) 250-0448.
