Donations needed to send local vets to awards show

A documentary directed by Houghton native Heather Courtney was nominated for an Emmy Award."Where Soldiers Come From" follows soldiers from the Copper Country who were sent to Afghanistan in 2009.A fundraiser will be held to help send veterans from the film to the awards ceremony. The fundraiser is Friday with a special screening of the film at 6 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Tickets are $10.â??We just sort of felt that they may win or they may not win but if they did win it would be a shame not to be represented in terms of the community and I think that's why we really got involved to give them an opportunity to go to New York and accept the award should they win,â?? said Frank Fiala, event organizer and owner of 5th & Elm. A pulled pork dinner will also be offered at 7:30 p.m. at the Monte Carlo sports bar in Hancock. Tickets for the dinner are $5.Donations can also be made at the 5th & Elm coffee shop in Houghton and Calumet or at the Monte Carlo in Hancock.
