Underground drilling operations at Rio Tinto's Eagle Mine in Marquette County finished up on Friday.
According to officials, the Nevada based contractor, Redpath Mining, completed their contract for underground drilling operations at the mine, resulting in two miles of tunnels in northern Marquette County. Officials with the mine say that the contactor started work in August of 2011, and completed the job with no injuries.
The Rio Tinto Eagle Mine now has a depth of approximately 800 feet, according to Dan Blondeau of Rio Tinto. He says that the mine has now moved on to the next phase, preparing bid packages for mining during operations and for construction of the remaining surface facilities.
Redpath brought 40 contractors to the mine, with 21 of those positions filled by local employees.
