      Drugged drivers beware

The Michigan State Police Gladstone Post now has a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Trooper Mark Erickson is trained to recognize drug impaired drivers and determine the category of drug they are using.

The 12 step process is lengthy, taking anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The DREs measure pupil size, take blood pressure and pulse readings and put the driver through multiple physical and mental tests. It??s a lot of work, but the DRE??s think it??s all worthwhile.

??It??s a great tool to use not just for law enforcement but it??s for also keeping the community safe and keeping the roads safe,?? said Tpr. Erickson.

Multiple impaired drivers have already been arrested in the U.P. using the DRE process.
