Rio Tinto announced Monday they've added a year to the expected life of the Eagle Mine Project in northern Marquette county. They're holding a series of community forums in Marquette and Baraga counties. Monday, they stopped in Ishpeming and updated residents on the state of Rio Tinto's Eagle Mine project. As they've hit the ore body at Eagle Mine, they've discovered that it's bigger than they originally thought.
"Last year community members would've heard that we were looking at about a seven- to eight-year mine life; with the continued exploration underground, we have found additional ore so we are happy to say it's an eight-year life, and we will continue to explore underground in hopes to expand that ore body," said Dan Blondeau of Rio Tinto.
The next meeting will be this Thursday at the Humboldt Township Hall. Future meetings will be held in Marquette, Michigamme and Powell Township.
