Early morning fire at paper mill

A fire was reported on Monday morning at FutureMark Papers in Manistique. Manistique Public Safety and Volunteer Fire Officers were dispatched at 3:59 a.m. for a fire in the paper machine on the second floor of the building.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers determined that the fire was confined within a vent above the machine. Fire officers accessed the roof and extinguished the fire. Paper mill personnel initially fought and contained the fire.

The paper machine sustained minimal damage, although a roof vent and fan on the roof received substantial damage. Officers remained on the scene until 6:30 a.m. to vent heat from the building and extinguish hot spots.

Manistique officers received assistance in fighting this fire from Hiawatha Volunteer Fire Department and paper mill employees.
