Eki Loppet gets skiers on trails in Munising

Cross country skiers gathered in Munising on Saturday for the fourth annual Eki Loppet at the Valley Spur trail head. Skiers could choose a 7-kilometer or 14-kilometer classic or freestyle race.

Trail conditions could not have been better, thanks to volunteers who spent many hours grooming the trails. Fifty-five skiers competed this year, and some of them traveled a long way for the race.

Sixty-two-year-old Tom Rulseh and his son, Johnathan, are from Three Lakes, Wisconsin. Saturday was their first Eki Loppet, and Tom won the 7-kilometer classic and Johnathan won the 14-kilometer freestyle.

"It was a great course," said Tom. "The people here in Valley Spur did a great job of grooming, laying it out, it flowed really well, and that means a lot when you're racing...coming down a hill and being able to scoot right up the next one. It's just so much fun."
