Michigan Tech is celebrating engineering with a week full of activities that promote engineering studies.
Earlier this week, the university held an activities night with elementary students in the area to show them different types of engineers. Friday, students from the chemical engineering honors society were on campus showing students the chemistry behind the kitchen.
Students handed out free food and talked about the science of a salad dressing.
"It's a liquid-liquid equilibrium system between the oil and the vinegar," said Julie Tomasi of the Chemical Engineer Honors Society. "Usually, when you put oil and vinegar together, they don't mix, and you can see that, but if you look at a salad bottle, they stay mixed for a really long time, and that's because of the emulsifiers they add."
The university is also hosting events on campus about water treatment and home energy efficiency.
