The City of Escanaba is hosting their Learn to Swim program again this year. Kids of all ages and skill levels are able to take part in these five week programs for $30.
There are seven different levels of courses, all taught by certified lifeguards. The first course, geared towards kids three to six years old, teaches water exploration. The final course teaches advanced skills and emergency water safety.
Levels two through seven are held in Lake Michigan and teach the children the possible dangers of the lake.
"So just to get exposure to a different atmosphere, like an outside lake, is, I think, very important for kids to learn and to see the difference between, say a swimming pool and the lake," says recreational director Tom Penegor.
