As the calendar flips over to August, that means it's time to start the fair season in the U.P.
The Alger County Fair wrapped up Sunday at the Rock River Fairgrounds in Chatham. Visitors could find lots of vendor booths, inflatable slides, and of course, the traditional fair food.
Sunday's activities included a firefighters' contest and team penning. For many of the horse riders, this was their first time competing at a fair and they were having a great time.
"I just think it's really fun, and it's a great experience to bring your horse and ponies," says Amelia Cole of Marquette.
Hannah Peterson of Marquette adds, "Yesterday I did halter showmanship and I did walk trot. I used this horse named Rain, and today I came to do team penning."
Many of Sunday's youth riders said they'd love to compete at the fair again next year.
