Friends and family of Monica Matus gathered at McCarty's Cove Thursday morning for a sunrise ceremony.
Matus was a Northern Michigan University student studying art and design and secondary education. She was found dead at her Woodland Park apartment on April 5. Her family and close friends spread flower petals into Lake Superior as a way to say goodbye.
"She was a beautiful, talented, kind person, and you could see that in her artwork and the lives she's touched," said Asa Faust, friend of Matus. "Monica loved traveling, she loved nature. She saw the beauty in everything, and this ceremony just expresses that."
Monica's family held a memorial service for her Thursday night, giving her loved ones a chance to share poems, memories and songs. Matus studied at NMU but was originally from Chicago.
