A large barn fire was reported at 4:45 a.m. Monday at Seeds and Spores Family Farm on Greenfield Road in Chocolay Township. The barn was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived.
Crews were on the scene until 11:00 a.m. Jeff Hatfield, one of the farm's owners, said no animals or people were injured in the fire. He said the barn was the center of the farm's operations. Hatfields estimates that they lost $200,000-300,000 worth of meat, fertilizer and equipment.
"We'll just pick up the pieces," Hatfield said. "Everything is still growing in the field, and we just need a new place to harvest and pack it and keep it cool, but we'll just pick up and keep going."
There is no word on what started the fire. Fire crews from Chocolay Township, Sands Township, Skandia-West Branch, Marquette Township and the City of Marquette were on the scene, along with Marquette General EMS and Marquette County Rescue 131.
