As the weather cools, and the need for firewood rises, the Hiawatha National Forest would like to remind the to buy their firewood cutting permits. These allow the community to cut dead and down wood on national forest land.
Permits are good for one year and allow the owner to collect four cords of wood. Anyone in the Munising, Manistique or Rapid River area interested in purchasing a permit is asked to call the office in advance. This will ensure personel trained on the new system will be available.
"We apologize for any inconvience the public may run into getting the permits," said public affairs officer, Janet Ekstrum. "The system is just coming into operation and as we learn how, that we'll be able to serve our public much better."
