      Former Mayor Pro-Tem pleads guilty to embezzlement

      The former Escanaba City Council member and Mayor Pro-Tem who is facing embezzlement charges pled guilty Monday at Delta County Circuit Court.

      Leo Evans pled guilty to one count of embezzlement of more than $50,000 but less than $100,000. This charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. In exchange for his plea, one count of embezzlement of $100,000 or more, was dropped.

      According to Evans, he was an agent of the Eagles Club. He embezzled funds from the club between the years 2011 and 2014.

      "I used checks or I used money for personal use," says Evans. "My total that I can recollect is approximately $83,000 during that time frame."

      Evans is scheduled to be sentenced September 11.
