Fourth of July Dog Dash a success

Costume Contest 2nd Place: Morzy as Statue of Doggery (Rick Custard)

Over 50 people started this Fourth of July with a dog walk or run.

The Sixth Annual Marquette Sunrise Dog Dash was Friday morning. The event benefits the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter.

Man and his or her best friend could take a leisurely trek around the one or two and a half mile course. Some dogs, and their masters, like Harrison Dehlin and his companion Zephyr, take the Dog Dash seriously, looking to improve their time.

"Not as good as last year, but I got first," says Dehlin

Harrison and Zephyr had a time of 7:17.

The Dog Dash is growing in size each year since it switched from an event before Marquette's Fourth of July Parade to a cooler morning walk-run. People come from all over with their pet in hand.

"Well, we decided to come out; it's a beautiful morning and wanted to come out and support a good cause," says Frank Klarich of Chicago. "Plus get a little exercise for our dog and kids."

After the Dog Dash, there was a dog costume contest. The K-9's dressed in holiday fashions. One little dog was outfitted as a soccer ball, and his owner cheering on Brazil now that the U.S. is out of World Cup competition. But my favorite had to be the wolves in sheep clothing. These are a breed of Husky call Tamaskan.

Friday's Dog Dash raised $800. The money goes to UPAWS to keep the shelter running.
