The UP200 and Midnight Run sled dog races are planned to start Friday evening from downtown Marquette, and Mother Nature decided to give them some fresh powder.
Several inches of blowing snow fell Thursday night and Friday morning, getting plows out on the road prior to race preparation on Washington Street.
Mushers and their teams began to show up at Riverside Auto shortly after 9 a.m. for the vet checks prior to the race. Veterinarians checked paws, hearts and weights of the animals to see if they are fit to compete in the UP200 and Midnight Run.
Trucks steadily arrived with loads of snow throughout Friday morning to cover Washington Street for the race, making detours in effect for Marquette motorists. Below is a map of the closed roads in Marquette during the UP200 and Midnight Run.
