A new battle is brewing in Lansing. Should cherries or blueberries be named the State Fruit of Michigan.
The western part of the state has dozens of blueberry farms while cherries are a huge crop in the northern part of the state. Wild blueberry picking is also a major draw across the Upper Peninsula.
The topic came to light through the efforts of several schools in Michigan. To make their point, about 100 schools kids were at the capitol on Tuesday. Half wearing red shirts and half wearing blue shirts.
Lawmakers say it was a chance for the students to see how government works. And they are learning that when it comes to politics, patience is needed. Lawmakers did not vote on the bills. Instead, they tabled the issue until the next committee meeting.
