Seventeen teams from colleges across the country and Canada arrived in the Copper Country Monday for the 12th annual Clean Snowmobile Challenge .
The week-long competition began with students unloading their custom sleds and going through technical inspections.
The snowmobiles will be tested on fuel-efficiency, noise, and performance. The teams are split into two categories: internal combustion or zero emissions.
We TMre stressing fuel economy this year, so we'll be measuring that several different ways, says lead organizer Jay Meldrum. We'll watch it on the endurance run in a lab, and we have an inservice event where we can measure it on the trail.
The public is welcome to attend Tuesday morning's kickoff event at the Keweenaw Research Center.
People can also see the sleds on display at the Copper Country Mall Wednesday night.
