      Funding for 'green aviation'

More jobs could be coming to the U.P. with the help of $580,000 through the Small Business Administration.

The Upper Peninsula's Green Aviation Coalition recently received word they'll be getting the federal grant. The coalition is a public-private partnership focused on expanding the green aviation industry in the U.P.

The coalition targets three U.P. airports: Delta County, Sawyer International, and Houghton County.

Officials say the grant will provide businesses the services to jumpstart not only the aircraft dismantling and recycling industry, but other areas of green aviation.

"It's going to allow us to enhance our capability to create jobs locally and then compete on the national and global economic level," says coalition member Paul Arsenault. "We have a couple businesses in Marquette. The Delta County Airport has at least one prospect that's interested in the green aviation industry; Houghton County also through their smartzone has some prospects."

Out of 173 nationwide applicants, the U.P. was one of only ten to receive funding.
