Gems, rocks and minerals sparkle in annual show

The 35th Annual U.P. Gem and Mineral Show was held in Ishpeming Saturday. Vendors from across the Midwest had their collections on display and available for purchase. Some of the items included iron minerals, copper, and rocks native to the Upper Peninsula. Jewelry was also available for those interested in wearing their favorite gemstones. Lawrence Falater has been collecting mining money and stock certificates for half a century. "The history is just great up here, and when you get something here like the scene of Pictured Rocks, you can really connect and relate to it. It's a lot of fun, and I know a lot of collectors up here. They've helped me and I help them," said Falater. This is the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club's main event. The money raised is put into a scholarship fund for residents interested in attending Michigan Tech or NMU.
