Gift cards: hottest item this holiday season

According to the National Retail Federation , eight out of ten shoppers will buy gift cards as a Christmas present this holiday.

â??This time of year itâ??s picking up more and more,â?? said Kurt Freudenstein, an Assistant Manager at Getzs Clothiers. â??We just had to replenish our gift card stock.â??

Fredenstein believes itâ??s popular because it's the gift of choice.

â??People might not be sure of a color or a size,â?? Freudenstein explained, â??or they see all sorts of stuff that they want and they can't decide on one, so they just get a gift card.â??

Consumers can either purchase specific retail or all-purpose gift cards. Although general-purpose gift cards, including MasterCard, Visa, and American Express, let you shop anywhere, they always come with hidden fees.

â??The purchase fee, which is what the buyer would pay, range from $3.95 to $6.95,â?? said Janna Herron, a Credit Card Analyst at

According to , 71 percent of those general-purpose cards also have inactivity fees.

â??If you don't use it after 12 straight months, the issuer can charge a monthly fee,â?? Herron stated. â??Those range between $2.50 to $3.00 per month.â??

Other uncommon fees include shipping, replacing or customizing general purpose gift cards.
