Give the gift of a home this holiday season

The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter is holding their annual Home for the Holidays open house.

The event is an opportunity to see the animals and meet the volunteers and staff running the shelter. During the event, the first 20 pet adoptions are free, and every adoption after is half off the rate.

Between the shelter, foster care, and PetSmart, they have 70 cats and 10 dogs available right now.

"Every pet that is adopted will get a Santa Claus stocking full of goodies, and also we have lovely volunteers that have made blankets for the cats," said Ann Brownell of UPAWS. "So, some very nice things go home besides, of course, the most important thing...a bundle of joy and love."

The open house takes place on Friday from noon until 6:30 p.m. in the evening and refreshments will also be served.
