Repaved courts and more handicap accessibility can be expected at Escanabaâ??s Ludington Park. On Friday, a $42,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources was approved.
Ludington Park was one of 19 approved for the Passport Grant. There are four tennis courts and one basketball court scheduled to be repaved in Ludington Park.
Due to the cold weather and rain, the courts need to be repaved every 7 to 10 years, and the parkâ??s courts are about 9 years old.
In addition to the courts, Escanabaâ??s Parks and Recreation Department plan to pave a sidewalk connecting the courts and pavilion to the parking lot and restrooms.
"I think they're going to respond very favorably,â?? said Tom Penegor, Escanabaâ??s Recreation Director. â??When we sent the grant out, we did get a lot of community support by various letters from various organizations."
Construction is set to begin around May 2014.
